If I told you that there is no NEED to have friends as an adult – and that you could survive perfectly fine on a life of complete isolation – you would look at me like I am crazy. And rightfully so.
Just because someone CAN survive in a completely lonely state, why would they want to? Clearly socialization has benefits.
Unfortunately this is the ‘logic’ that comes from many low carb gurus. “There is no requirement for carbohydrates in the diet!!!” they say.
True. Glucose is SOOOOOO important to the body, it can make it from other things, like protein.
The question isn’t whether it is “necessary” or “unnecessary”. Like having friends, it’s a matter of whether it is beneficial. And clearly, the answer is “yes.”
The whole point of looking at nutrition in this modern time of abundance isn’t to figure out what our minimum requirements are to stay alive and then deprive ourselves of everything else.
The WHOLE POINT is to use nutrition in an emotionally healthy way to maximize the benefits we receive from eating. Period.
Screw what is “required”. I don’t know about you – but I sure as hell don’t remotely care about using a minimalist diet as a means of reaching some sort of ‘enlightenment’. I want to feel great and have a healthy relationship with food.
